You have to ask yourself the question, given the resources it has at its disposal, the seemingly limitless funds and general marketing & personnel clout that it can throw at a situation, how come Google so often seem to open their mouths to change their feet?

How can such an organization that prides itself on the quality of its staff and resources engaged employ such a bunch of idiots to actually go out and do what they do at times?

First there was last year’s little escapade over the serious emergence of their new Social Media Promotional angles when they said that certain types of Link and Referral data was being withheld for…wait for it……Data protection issues. Then they were found to be selling, yes you’ve guessed it, that same Data to Adwords Buyers if they paid the right fees. The whole exercise was then blown wide apart when most observers rightly (in my opinion) highlighted the whole incident as the opening shots in driving the free version of Webmaster Tools under and the emergence of a Premium version of Webmaster Tools.

Now they’ve gone and done it again in another “hello Mr Foot please meet Mr Mouth” incident over paid Linking Campaigns.

Now for those who have only just entered this fun packed little Industry of ours, Google have developed, over the years, quite a negative stance (understatement here) on the whole concept of paid links. They don’t like them, they don’t like the practice of it and if they catch sites doing it then they basically consign them to the “nether regions of on-line hell” (or certainly below No 500 in the index or ban entirely) or so the theory goes.

Imagine the hilarity then when the Big G themselves get caught out a few days ago, supposedly engaged in a paid Link Building Campaign for their Chrome Browser but when challenged about it, suddenly develop a sense of moral outrage that “yes the Campaign was ours but it was not what we signed up for!”.

Really?

As they say over here in Ireland, “Do they think we’re not wise?”

Anyway back to the point, this whole episode highlights a great many things.

Firstly Google are going to do what Google want, for the interests of Google and not anyone else and don’t let anyone convince you otherwise?

Secondly they are not above making waves and delivering changes that come completely out of the blue as with yesterdays “Search, plus your World” announcement.

Now this has to be as clear an indication that they have finally decided to come out of the closet and take on FaceBook head on in the Social Arena with a beefed up “Google Plus” program.

Now my opinions of Google Plus in the early stages were very undecided and were very much powered by my distrust of all things Google and I still have some of the reservations but I do think that Google Plus could be “where it’s at in 2012″ and that 2012 could be the first year that FaceBook “catches a cold” (albeit not a major one).

We need to study at greater length the Google “Search, plus your World” concept further and we’ll write about in the days and weeks ahead as this could be something that it is essential to keep on the right side of with regards to Google but let me finish this with one last  warning.

If in your or your client’s Campaigns you are indulging in anything even remotely, how can I put this, slightly greyish/leading to Black Hat then steer clear of Google Plus by a country mile.

The downside of Google Plus is that because they call the shots as you can only take part if you have a Google controlled account, this means that if a Grey Squirrel as much as breaks wind in Southern Spain then the boffins at the Googleplex in California will know about it. I know this might sound as if I am an apologist for the likes of George Orwell et all but Google plus could possibly turn out to be the most potentially Orwellian of online marketing tools in that it really is a case of Google playing the role of Big Brother.

They do know what you are up to so keep it smart and stay safe.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t indulge in the odd piece of “cute” marketing as that would be boring but just don’t do it with any user logins or profiles that you use for Google Plus.

Hi Gang,

I’ve been writing recently about the success we’ve been getting over the past few Months with combining the twin power of good Press Releases and then hitting them hard with associated support practices chief amongst whom are SLS.

The process goes in this order:

1.    Keyword Research. In our case this is fairly tightly focused and widespread as to be honest we don’t want to spend too much time fighting a variety of battles so we want Niches that we can get into fairly fast. By fast I mean hours rather than days if possible

2.    Drafting the Press Release. Now as far as our main aim is to get into Niches quickly we also want to make sure that wherever possible our Chosen key phrase is right at the beginning of the body text. This is because at the moment Google is sourcing its Meta Data (i.e. the data it uses as part of its ranking algorithm) from the first 300 Characters of the Body Text. Now when you take into account that this also includes the beginning information:

then basically you are down to the first 145-155 Characters so our technique is put your Key phrase in first and then we usually close it with a question mark to make it isolated.

3.    Press Release Submission. Now the Service we use and one that we’ve run Webinars over is this one: http://www.warriorplus.com/linkwso/5lmj33/368 and yes this is an affiliate link but then I have to keep the present Mrs Morgan as happy as I can . The real reason we use and recommend this Service is that quite simply, we’ve found Dennis and Eric to be the best suppliers and have the best after sales and support going. For unlimited Press Releases the current rate (whatever that is) is vastly under priced but as I say, it’s the fact that they deliver every time with the Press Releases and deliver promptly. At the moment we have anywhere between 1-2 per day going through per day and by and large without any issues at all. If there are any issues and there very rarely are (I think I’ve had one problem release) the after sales support is so good they by and large tell you there is a problem before you have any chance of finding out.

4.    Promoting the Clippings Report. Usually a few days after the Press Release has emerged and been submitted they issue a clippings report. Now I have prepared a few videos covering this but will edit them all into one master video but the basics of the process is this. The Clippings report contains about 50-60 Urls of where you can find your Press Release. Take these Urls and using any one of a number of services, mash these Urls into one RSS Feed and then submit this RSS Feed into Yahoo Pipes and then run the pipe. Take the Pipes RSS Feed and submit via your favourite RSS Submitter and hey presto, you have Yahoo all over your links like a rash and also via redirects; you have links to all of your individual clippings from Yahoo. Not bad eh?

Next up you can repeat this exercise with Google Reader and suddenly you have links to your clippings from Google. Finally we take the RSS feed that we’ve created and then submit it through SLS as well as a number of the key Clippings Urls (the ones where the master site has a domain rank of over 5) and then promote as per normal. We usually only hit about 6-7 of the Urls as this is enough to make sure that these PR Urls have enough grunt behind them to dip in and out of Page 1 in Google usually very quickly.

I’ve just recorded a Client Case Study video that shows us submitting a Press Release on November 7^th and by November 10^th (less than 3 days later) we had notched up 2 No 1 slots for the clients inner page, one No 2 and the rest were 5, 6 and 7 slots. All six terms were on Page 1 and the Press Releases in this case hit Page 1 on five out of the six occasions and on the sixth the PR was at No 12.

I can’t reveal the niche or Key phrase at present but once I’ve got the client permission to do so (and I expect this in a few weeks time) then I will release the videos free of charge to members as a case study exercise. You can appreciate that we have to respect the Client wishes first and foremost and once they feel that their Campaigns will no longer be compromised then we will be able to proceed.

Just wanted to update members on a new training video we’ve just posted live in the Simple Leveraging YouTube Channel.

On Monday April 11^th, Google announced officially to the world that the Panda Update now applied to Google results outside of North America.

Now on the face of it the new update has by and large seemed OK so far to us here at “Leveraging Central”. If anything the only thing we have noticed is that the average SERPS level of pages has risen and that for some reason the Nett Yield on the Adsense units has also increased. We’re not too sure whether there is any correlation here or whether this has more to do with the start of the Advertising Second Quarter and hence more budget being freed up but nonetheless any increase in revenue is gratefully appreciated in these “inclement economic times”.

So back to what Google have been up to.

As we have mentioned before, the update appears to be concentrating very much on ensuring that quality reigns supreme but then Google go and do what only Google do best and that is to push things so far that ultimately they screw up.

When you consider matters pertaining to Google I’m often reminded of the old sixties classic duet between Frank and Nancy Sinatra “Something Stupid” where the line goes “and then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid….” only in this case it’s doing something and that stupid thing in our books is the new addition of the facility within the new Google Chrome Extension that allows viewers to block domains from their results if required. Now this in isolation is not necessarily a bad thing if handled ethically and correctly but therein lies the rub. This facility has other features and aspects too.

In a couple of comments that I found disconcerting Google via Matt Cutts let this one slip out of the bag:

” If installed, the extension also sends blocked site information to Google, and we will study the resulting feedback and explore using it as a potential ranking signal for our search results.”

Another Google insider also stated:

“While we’re not currently using the domains people block as a signal in ranking, we’ll look at the data and see whether it would be useful as we continue to evaluate and improve our search results in the future.”

Now as Chris Crum in Webpronews.com said:

“One has to wonder how Google would use such a signal in a way that could not be gamed by people getting their competitors’ sites blocked. There are other potential abuse scenarios as well. Personal spite comes to mind.

It’s possible that it could become a ranking signal and nobody will ever know for sure. Google will not reveal its entire list of signals. They may keep this one close to the chest, although that doesn’t mean it won’t still get abused based on hunches.”

Overall the new “algo” change could be a good thing but to be honest, my advice to all of our Clients in our SEO Division is to really consider diversifying all of their SEO Promotion and to proactively go after good results in Yahoo and Bing as to be honest no one knows where this new Google Direction is going to end up.

Hi Gang,

Just a quickie to tell you all about a freebie we have coming out later this week for members. I have had various discussions over the past week or so and one of the common themes is “how do I go about rescuing a domain / web site when it has appeared to disappear from sight index wise and / or been slapped by one or other of the Search Engines?”

Now if we are all honest then most of us have been in this unfortunate situation from time to time and the best piece of advice that I can always offer in a situation like this is to look at ways that you can “freshen up” the back links landscape of the site or domain in question.

This is quite often one of the less well known aspects of the SEO but it really is one of the most basic and the reason behind it is actually quite obvious when you think about it.

What Search Engines are looking for when they “come calling” is to see a web site that as far as its Link Profile is concerned is a profile that as closely as possible approximates that that would have been created if the entire process had been created by human intervention and not via a network of software applications.

What is that we humans do best?

Screw up, that’s we do more often than most and in a lot of cases that is what we do best and as such that is quite often what the SE’s want to see. As such as far as inbound links then the SE’s want to see a good healthy mix of the following:

1. Direct Anchor Links
2. Indirect links
3. Redirects
4. Dofollow links
5. Nofollow Links
6. Typos
7. Good IP spread of inbound links

A back links landscape comprised of a healthy mix and spread of the above type of links will stand you in good stead and make whatever landscape you are constructing look credible and believable.

So how do we go about the above and make this whole landscape look varied and believable. Firstly don’t shy away from sites that only provide “nofollow” links as these can still be extremely useful for two reasons. Bear in mind that our back links serve two purposes. Firstly we want to try and pass on and / or aquire as much “juice” or credibility as we can from the originating site as possible and secondly we want to try and make sure that the links and / or pages we are promoting are discovered as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

Now bear in mind what the “nofollow” attribute does to a link. Basically it tells GoogleBot not to pass on any acquired power / PR / ”juice” or whatever to the target site for the link but that is all. Contrary to a lot of folks it does not tell the Crawler or Bot not to follow that link just to disregard any link power that the originating site may or may not be passing on. As such “nofollow” links quite often are to be found on sites or locations that might be good for traffic and to that end they are perfect.

Bear in mind that our second major attribute of an inbound link is to make our target pages discovered as soon as possible and therefore “nofollow” links serve this purpose excellently. So the ideal scenario is to use “nofollow” links to link to or support pages where “dofollow” links exist to make them discovered as soon as is possible.

So we drive traffic and Bots via our “nofollow” links to our other back links and therefore get them discovered and crawled and therefore the Linking Process begins and the “dofollow” links start to accumulate and direct power to our target and / or other web 2.0 pages that are part of our structure.

Now whilst we were fine tuning our approach to “re invigorating” supposed dead sites we happened to stumble upon ( no pun intended as Stumbleupon was not a site that we used in this scenario) another of the so called New Generation of sites that helped us kick start one of our so called dead sites.

Now quite often sites or pages can slip down the indexes if Google or Yahoo etc think the page or site in question is dead and no longer current or valid. At this point you have to do two things. First off you need to rejuvenate the inbound links – freshen the profiles of these links up as much as is possible and then secondly you have to tell the Bots that the site in question is not actually dead or moribund but still “alive and kicking”.

There are several ways that you can accomplish the latter but one of the most effective ways of doing this we have found is to make sure that as much traffic finds its way to the site in question and by the very nature of this traffic, it tells Google / Yahoo/Bing (almost forces them) to reconsider its assessment of the viability of the site.

We have found Twitter to be rather useful in this and it was whilst we were experimenting with Twitter earlier today that we found out how useful it could be.

Now that Google has started to crawl and index Tweets then Twitter really starts to figure quite proactively as far as site promotion is concerned. Not only is it an ace way to drive highly targeted and focussed traffic to your site but if you have the support of a at least one (preferably more) good Twitter accounts with “clout” then there can be considerable benefits all round.

By “clout”, I mean a Twitter user profile with a reasonable number of followers that suggest to the outsider that it is an account of some standing” (the more followers the better) and as such merits consideration.

Now the commonly held view is that with Twitter you have to get your user accounts over the 2,000 follower marker as soon as is possible. Once you have more than 2,000 followers your credibility rises accordingly.

We have just taken delivery from one our associates an incredible deal for Link Wheels.

The size of the Link Wheel we ordered was for 100 spokes (pretty massive) and it also came with a free shot for the links to the supplier’s autopligg network. Now to be honest, this was very much an addition that was useful for spidering purposes if nothing else.

Pligg, for those who aren’t aware is a nice little application that is effectively an OS equivalent of Digg, i.e. it works very much by way of peer recommendation and votes etc but to be honest has very much been abused over the past 12 months or so and as such the majority of the thousands of Pligg sites there are out there are all virtually now “nofollow” so for SEO purposes it is not that much use but they do add to your IP spread so there is a limited value. In this case we were more interested in the coverage for the client and the spidering so we went ahead.

The Link Wheel, when it arrived, actually comprised 117 spokes instead of the 100 guaranteed and what really made us feel good about this was that when we entered the urls into our Bulk C Class IP checker we found the following results:

Domains Entered 117
Total distinct domains: 117
Unique IPs: 113
Unique Subnets: 108
Domains with Duplicate subnets: 15
Domains with Duplicate IPs: 4

Which I think most folks will agree is pretty damn good for SEO purposes.

Now there are a number of ways of looking at this and I think the best way is as follows and this is the real reason I am writing out to all members about this. Firstly all these sites are based on WPMU which as you all know is the multi user platform for WordPress so is good for Googlebot recognition for starters. When we checked there were some nice PR4 and PR3 domains in there so its going to do some good as well but the real bonus for all of you out there who reckon they can do this sort of thing cheaper is this. Firstly, what you get is a good working list of WPMU sites for future reference which in itself is a result. We managed to compile a list of about 240 WPMU sites recently through a supposedly well known piece of software that is good for checking footprints etc and the results were complete junk.

By junk I mean we managed to find about 25 working sites out of 240 and it took us over 3 hours to check so we wasted all that time.

Here the grunt work is done for you.

The other aspect of this and is the reason that we will continue to use this service for our SEO clients (that’s how much we rate this service) is that on an hourly charge-out basis it’s a complete no-brainer.

The service retails at $90 for a 100 spoke Link Wheel (better that on Warriors? I think not), takes 6 days to deliver and will probably over deliver again. We have managed to negotiate a discount rate for our members of $20 so the cost drops again from $90 to $70 which is even more of a steal and I am sure as our usage of this service grows that we will be able to get an even keener price which of course we will pass on to members as and when this happens.

The other way of looking at this is how can you get this done yourself for the price?

Outsource it?

OK yes but as I said, you have to find the working WPMU (which are also still dofollow) sites first and that as we have shown takes time and effort and that costs.

I was talking to one of our first SLS members the other day and he was reporting how he was getting new blogs indexed and cached within Google in under 6 hours and we both realised that this was being done because he had activated and was using the SLS Premier Ping Server List. This is available as another one of the free members bonuses found at Simple Leveraging

I then realised that that although members were aware of this list, perhaps the newer members had not found time or the necessary location to download this list. This list is a real killer of a list and will improve the efficiency of your WordPress Blogs no end.

The process is the usual one whereby you login to your blog dashboard and go to “settings” and then “writing” then insert the contents of the text file and replace the entry for Pingomatic – Pingomatic is included in this list anyway.

I was speaking to one of our first SLS Members the other day and he was seeing terrific result from his Campaigns and the key we both felt was to make this system “sweat” as much as possible i.e. submit as many links as you can and really get up as much accumulated momentum as possible, as soon as possible.

The key thing is to remember that this sort of link building is all about driving as much link power as you can towards your target sites and then not to forget to support your supporting sites and that’s what SLS is all about. Targeted link support for your links too!

Anyone that deals with marketing and advertising on the Internet knows that link popularity is one of the main causes for high rankings.  And as we all know, high rankings lead to more traffic, which in turn leads to higher sales.  The biggest problem with doing link exchanges and using programs that automate the process is that you run the risk of gaining bad links on your site.  Bad links lead to reduced link popularity and in turn can eventually lead to being banned on search engines.  Everyone can agree that if you are banned from a large search engine like Google or Yahoo, then your website is in trouble.  I have come across a few places that allow you to grad good reciprocal links from ranking sites.   You want to do more reciprocal linking because it provides an incentive for both sites to keep the links up.
